Paint Suggestions: Help From My Readers

The other day I got an e-mail from one of my readers that said this: “I just wanted to let you know I love your blog. I have been using it to try to find the best paint colors (Sherwin Williams) for a new house we bought that- get this- is painted entirely in Dover White 50%! Dover White wasn't white enough they had to cut it to 50% :) My husband and I like neutral colors- especially mostly neutrals with a little color to them.  I have attached a few pictures of rooms I need help with- of course with all natural oak trim. Any suggestions from you or your readers is greatly appreciated!”
Today I want to help Jenna out, and would love to hear suggestions from you. What are your favorite neutral colors? Do you have a paint color in your home that you love and might work well in Jenna’s home? I know I have some very talented readers, many of you have let me into your homes through sending pictures and I can’t wait to hear what you suggest. paint suggestionspaint suggestions2paint suggestions3paint suggestions4paint suggestions5
Have a wonderful weekend!  I’ll be back next week with my suggestions and more paint colors!

  1. I have the main living spaces in my house painted Sherwin Williams Believable Buff (SW6120). I love it! It's very warm, and it changes color depending on the light. I have also seeen a lot of people use Sherin Williams Blonde SW6128 with Oak Trim. Another warm pretty color, but not as neutral as Believable Buff.

  2. What about Kilim Beige? I think Blonde would work well. For the kitchen or bath I like Grecian Green. It's a BM color, but SW could match it.

    1. I have seen Kilim Beige in 4 homes now and it looked beautiful in everyone. It's one of my all-time favorite neutrals that I think would look awesome in Jenna's house. Thanks Kris10 for sharing!

    2. Grecian Green is the best color ever! I looked forever for the right green, and finally found it. We recently moved, but I WILL paint some room in our new house Grecian Green!

  3. I think Sherwin Williams Agreeable gray would be great. It's modern but neutral with warm undertones and would look great with the oak trim and cabinets.

  4. I have SW 6211 Rainwashed in my powder room and it looks very serene with the oak trim. I'm not sure how it would scale up to a larger room though.

  7. I love Sea Salt by SW. It changes from light grey to grey-blue depending on the light of day.

  8. I painted a friends house last year with the same trim color. We choose Relaxd Khaki for the main color a good neutral. Goes with lots and made her trim pop. Also, did an accent wall in darker color quiver tan. Both Sherwin Williams. It was awesome. Especially with white and black frames. I would stick with one paint strip and pick lighter and darker shades from that strip to paint throughout your main living area. Keeps it flowing well. Another good color in Anew Gray it's a taupe with brown undertones. Goes well with Pewter Tankard a darker grey/brown that looks gret with oak furniture. Have fun and would love to see how it turns out.

    1. Our house was painted flat white when we bought it. We updated it with a combination of SW relaxed khaki and universal khaki. We LOVE it! The neutral walls go with every type of wood finish, furniture style, and color.

  9. Manchester tan by Benjamin Moore is beautiful with natural wood. It's not too dark during the day, yet looks warm and cozy at night. It's a very clean color. Bleeker beige by BM is also a nice color, although a little darker. Looks beautiful at night with the lights on. I love both paints! Good luck with the choices!

  10. We recently bought a house with the same trim color throughout the entire first floor. We too felt overwhelmed in choosing paint colors because most of our inspirational photos featured white trim (which we also love the look of). After many paint samples, we ended up going with SW Sawdust in the kitchen, which is an olive-gray color, sometimes appearing more green or more taupe depending on the light. Its a nice warm color that picks up some of the undertones in the woodwork. The main color we used throughout much of the house (first floor hallways, stairways upstairs and to basement, and foyer) was SW Amazing Gray, which is still warm, but counterbalances some of the underlying yellows in the trim, creating a great neutral. SW Intellectual gray is the next shade darker on the palette from Amazing Gray, and also looks great with oak trim (used as an accent wall color). We love all of our choices and the way they complement the wood trim. Good luck in choosing!

  11. A great neutral to try against wood tones is Sherwin Williams Rice Grain. Good Luck!

  12. I'm SO going to be bookmarking this post! We have an older home that has wood trim and after all the work we did stripping the paint off the trim, or the old clear coat, there's no way we're painting the trim again! We had rooms painted in every white imaginable when we stripped the Sanitest off the walls (yes, in rooms OTHER than the kitchen or bathroom!): Oxford White, Navajo White, Antique White, etc. But then we started wanting some color. A neighbor's house had colored walls and wood trim and when the house was up for sale, I went in for a tour and was horrified at the colors she chose with the trim! They were very muddy colors, I don't know how else to describe them. We went with more deep tones (a cranberry in the library), a sage green in the dining room, a golden yellow in the kitchen (we have oak cabinets in there), and a golden yellow with a sage green accent wall in one bedroom. We just painted the spare room a turquoisy green (more green than blue). It seems the colors with deep color saturations look better to us, not the muddy colors...

  13. I just painted our bedrooms relaxed khaki. I love it and also am going to another one that was suggested here in our family room/kitchen: revere pewter. I am hoping it turns out good! I might do a couple darker walls rockport gray - another favorite on here. :)

  14. I just painted my walls grant beige by benjamin moore. Its a beautiful linen color that is warm and neutral. I have 2-story living room and foyer and thought the color might be too dark. But once I put it up it looked great. Good Luck and keep using this blog. Its a great inspiration.
